ECSTACY, PASSION AND PAIN – ASK ME / I’LL TAKE THE BLAME – ROULETTE 7159 £10. M- A quality 1974 release from the pen and vocally highly talented Barbara Gaskin. This ones getting dance floor attention now, and a few bars will tell you why. A solid Modern upbeat rhythm and superb penetrating vocals combine so well to present a dance floor feast. Aided and abetted by Philly veteran Bobby Martin on productions. Class straight down the line. A mellow down tempo Deep Southern styled flip is thrown in for good measure. |
CONTRIBUTORS OF SOUL – LOOK WHAT YOU DONE FOR ME / I DON’T KNOW – NEW MISS 123 £6. M- For the Modern Soul devotee, comes this classy soulful double sider. The top side is reminisant of the Motown output of the early 70’s – an upbeat skip-a-long tempo and catchy lyrics. Very good dance floor material for sure. The flip is more held back in its flow and slightly funky, the vocals are the key ingredient for this side, but none the less a good mover.

JOSEPHINE TAYLOR – WHAT IS LOVE? / I WANNA KNOW – MAR-V-LUS £10. M- Whilst not as obvious or impacting as her ‘Aint Gonna Cry No more’, this is a superb slab of 60’s Chicago soul. A strong, slightly faster than mid tempo pace sets the scene for Ms. Taylor’s vocal talents, effortless chords with the typical outfit backings – kinda sparse but very effective.

CECIL PARKER – REALLY, REALLY LOVE YOU / PT2 – TEC 766 £6. M-
There’s quite a few gems secreted away on this proven longevity D.C. label from Northern Soul in the early days, to Funk and Modern Soul. Here on this 1980 outing, Cecil really pours out his heart and soul on this quality, well produced Modern floor filler. A great lilting mid to uptempo beat and smooth atmospheric vocals balance up a superior disc. |
LOUISIANA PURCHASE – CAN’T GET YOUR LOVE / FOR THE MOMENT – KELLI ARTS 1005. £3. M-
From the late seventies on the same Chicago label that gave us the great Walter Jackson’s Modern gem ‘Touching In The Dark’, comes this slightly commercial mid to uptempo Modern mover. Vocally the band are very proficient and the beat pleasing, id leave the jury out on the productions albeit from stalwarts Carl Davis and Otis Leavill, but that said it is a popular side on Modern dance floors.

THE PARLIAMENTS – LOOK AT WHAT I ALMOST MISSED / WHAT YOU BEEN GROWING –
REVILOT 217 £6. M- From the Soul days of George Clinton – a 60’s Detroit wonder tune, best known and appreciated from the highly respected Pat Lewis on Solid Hit. This version has more drive in the upbeat rhythm, but the vocals are somehow more pulled back and more bath-tub sounding without the emphasis given by Ms. Lewis. But that said this is still a great Northern Soul dancer on a highly collectable label from the Motor City. |
WILLIE PARKER – YOU GOT YOUR FINGER IN MY EYE / I LIVE THE LIFE I LOVE – M-PAC 7236 £6. E+ Powerhouse 60’s quality raw Chicago Northern Soul with an RnB slant. Razor blade vocals slice through the lyrics and the pulsating rhythm projects the song to a consistent uptempo scale. Excellent quality popular floor filler at 60’s venues.

JAMES HAZELHURST – I WON’T DIE / COME TO ME TOGETHER – SWAR 6021 £5. E+ This Jackson Mississippi 70’s label is well worth tracking down. This 1977 release is high in the pecking order; stunning soulful vocals on a memorable building mid tempo backing produce a superior Modern floor filler. The flip is more standard, a well balanced upbeat mover that flows through with expertise. |
